Types of Waves

"Waves are formed by a disturbing force; for most waves, this force is produced by the friction of the wind moving across the water. The force might also be an earthquake for a seismic sea wave (tsunami) or an abrupt change in atmospheric pressure for the back-and-forth sloshing of water called a seiche." (Excerpt from the book, The Evolving Coast, by Richard A. Davis, Jr., published by Scientific American Library, 1997, pg. 69)
