New Administrator of NOAA a Retired Navy Admiral
- The U.S. Senate confirmed on Dec. 3 retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad Lautenbacher Jr., as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, making him the new administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the nation's top science agency for oceans and the atmosphere. Let's hope that the selection of a retired military Admiral does not help the Navy deploy its controversial and unnecessary high frequency sonar system (which is very damaging to marine mammals) in the oceans.
