Army Corps Is Supposed to Protect Wetlands, But Allows Their Destruction Instead

"The Army Corps of Engineerswhich oversees wetlands protection under the Clean Water Act has destroyed more wetlands than any other developer. Nationwide, the Corps approves 99 percent of all requests to drain or fill marshes, streams and other wetlands. This mind-set was on display after Sept 11 when the chief Corps regulator sent out an email to staff nationwide: 'The harder we work to expidite issuance of permits, the more we serve the Nation by moving the economy forward.'" (Excerpt from the Washington Post, June 2002)
