War Means More Sewage in Coastal Waters?

"Because of the war on terrorism and the economy, ... we're standing on our request" of $1.21 billion in annual federal spending for modernizing sewage treatment and storm water runoff systems, G. Tracy Mehan III, the Environmental Protection Agency's assistant administrator for water, told the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee last week. - The Bush Administration's and the EPA's request for only $1.21 billion in annual federal spending on sewage infrastructure represents a 10+ percent reduction, even though the EPA just released a report citing a potential $271 billion shortfall in sewage treatment infrastructure spending by 2020.
