California Agribusiness Wants More Exemptions from Clean Water Laws

Excerpt from the action alert from the organization, Defenders of Wildlife at http://www.defenders.org : Agricultural pollution, including pesticide-laden irrigation water, is the largest source of pollution for many of California's waterways, threatening fish and wildlife as well as public health. Despite the devastating impact of agricultural pollution on our water and wildlife, farms and dairies in California have enjoyed a waiver from our state and federal clean water laws. Now that this waiver is set to expire at the end of the year, agribusiness is pressuring the Central Valley Water Quality Control Board to delay action to reduce agricultural pollution. Bowing to agribusiness pressure, the board has proposed yet another waiver for agriculture that will not ensure protection for our water quality, fish and wildlife and public health. The board is seeking public comment on this proposal by Nov. 21, 2002. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Send a free e-mail to the Water Quality Control Board, in care of Chairman Robert Schneider urging them to protect California waterways and not grant another waiver to farms and dairies. Go to http://www.denaction.org, sign in, then select Alert #193. The deadline for comments is November 21, so please send your e-mail today. You can e-mail Chairman Schneider directly at Agwaiver@rb5s.swrcb.ca.gov or send a fax to:(916) 255-3015.
