Greenhouse Gas Emissions Decrease in USA in 2001, Largely Due to Slow Economy

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, annual greenhouse gas emissions decreased for the first time in over a decade, by 1.2% in 2001. From 1991 to 2000, U.S. annual greenhouse gas emissions increased by an average of 1.3% and at the end of 2001 were still 11.9% higher than in 1990. The slow economy in 2001 was the main reason for the decline.
