Over 40,000 Raw Sewage Spills Annually

"Despite tens of billions of dollars of public investment in sewage treatment and conveyance over the last three decades, it is estimated that there are still over 40,000 overflows of raw sewage every year, causing dangerous contamination of rivers, lakes and coastal waters. EPA has estimated that simply improving operation and maintenance of existing facilities could eliminate 90 percent of such overflows." - excerpt from the Ocean Conservancy action alert at http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/CWA30/explanation
