Solar UV Affects Sea Life

"Recent results tend to confirm the general consensus that solar UV negatively affects aquatic organisms. Reductions in productivity, impaired reproduction and development, and increased mutation rate have been shown for phytoplankton, macroalgae, fish eggs and larvae, zooplankton, and primary and secondary consumers exposed to UV radiation. Decreases in biomass productivity due to enhanced UV-B are relayed through all levels of the intricate food web..." - excerpt from a paper in the journal Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences, with the excerpt appearing in the email newsletter, SeaWeb Ocean Update: July 2003.
