Big Winter Storms Can Linger

"On average, virtually every stretch of U.S. coast is struck by a severe storm every few years. And unlike hurricanes, which pass so quickly they usually do comparatively little damage to the beach itself, big winter storms can linger for days, marking the coast for years or even decades." -excerpt from the book, Against the Tide: The Battle for America's Beaches, by Cornelia Dean, Columbia University Press, 1999, pp. 144-145.
