Gold Mining at the Beach - Is This a Problem?

"The adopted rule is very unclear about how Parks intends to balance beach mining with existing uses and how they intend to respect the natural values of coastal beaches," said Kathy Greer, Washington Coast Coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation. "The rule requires a permit from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, but does not mention fees for permits, which seems odd in light of the state budget shortfalls. Given the cutbacks at our natural resource agencies, how is the state going to manage and monitor this new activity on our beaches?" - excerpt from article at seattlepi.com.
