Select a water footprint calculator from the list above, or find one online that suits your region. Obtain permission from the creators to embed or link to the calculator on your Chapter website. Drive traffic to the calculator to encourage people to learn how to improve their water use habits (see the report below for more tips). Even if your region is not experiencing water shortages, how we use and treat water has direct impacts on our coast, so water conservation helps everyone. Furthermore, due to climate change and increased population, if your region is not already experiencing water shortages, chances are it will in the near future.

With the proper permissions, your Chapter could actually compile the information entered into the water footprint calculator and organize a competition to see which household can reduce their water demand by the greatest percentage. We suggest launching such a competition is April and running it through October (typically the highest water use season). Nothing is more motivating than a little competition and the exercise will help everyone get more in touch with their water use habits and hopefully learn to recognize the value of water.
