Seafloor Spreading and Subduction

"Mid-ocean ridges are centers of seafloor spreading, a process by which new ocean crust is made. Seafloor spreading and subduction are the two forces responsible for changing the size and shape of the oceans - something that is happening all the time. New crust is made at the ridges, and swallowed up (subducted) at the deep-sea trenches." (Excerpt from the book, The Ocean Atlas, by Anita Ganeri, published by Dorling Kindersley, 1994, pg. 36)
