Three Main Types of Coral Reef

"There are 3 main types of coral reef. Fringing reefs grow in shallow water along the shore on rocky coastlines. Barrier reefs also grow along the shore, but they are separated from it by lagoons (shallow saltwater lakes) or straits. Atoll islands begin as reefs growing onthe slopes of volcanoes. The volcanoes then sink, leaving the atoll behind. Atolls surrround deeper lagoons." (Excerpt from the book, The Ocean Atlas, by Anita Ganeri, published by Dorling Kindersley, 1994, pg. 31)
