Websites

Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Resources Division (CRD) website was updated in July 2011.

The CRD website is fairly well organized and easy to use. It provides information on water quality, beach ecology, and limited information on beach erosion and coastal access.

Information about the Coastal Management Program, including links to some relevant statutes and rules, is available via the website. State Laws Under Federal Consistency are listed and summarized. Another summary of laws and regulations can be found here.

Key Legislation includes:

  • Coastal Marshlands Protection Act O.C.G.A. 12-5-280
  • Shore Protection Act O.C.G.A. 2-5-230
  • Georgia Coastal Management Act O.C.G.A. 12-5-320
  • Right of Passage O.C.G.A. 52-1-30
  • Protection of Tidewaters O.C.G.A. 52-1-1

An excellent summary of the Coastal Management Program, the coastal resources of Georgia and the goals, objectives and challenges of the program is contained in State of Georgia Coastal Management Program and Program Document, a 269-page report produced in 2003 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resources and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Management Program.

The Coastal Management link on the website provides a good summary of the program with links to the various Coastal Management Program activities.

The Website provides access to number of publications, including Georgia Sound newsletter.

Other publications and information on a variety of coastal topics can be accessed at the Education and Outreach tab.

Maps for shellfish harvest areas by county are available here.

Additional maps showing water quality sampling points and National Coastal Assessment sampling points are planned to be added.

The Website is up-to-date.
